Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Displacement Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
